Recently, Vietnam Electricity (EVN) announced that at 10:18 a.m. today (October 7), EVN and the Power Project Management Board No. 1, in coordination with the contractors, successfully lowered the rotor of Unit 2 into position at the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant Expansion Project (Hoa Binh Ward, Phu Tho Province), thereby completing the rotor installation for the entire project.
According to Power Project Management Board No. 1, the rotor of Unit 2 weighs approximately 585 tons, with a diameter of 11.24 meters and a height of 2.50 meters. The rotor is classified as an oversized and overweight piece of equipment, requiring a special construction procedure.
Therefore, the entire assembly, alignment, and lowering process was carried out under strict technical supervision, using a high-capacity lifting system with a lifting capacity of 900 tons, counterweight balancing equipment, and other specialized machinery. At the same time, lowering the rotor required close and well-coordinated cooperation among all project teams involved.

The successful completion of the rotor installation for Unit 2 marks an important milestone, creating a foundation for the continued implementation of various electromechanical installation works.
Mr. Bui Phuong Nam, Director of EVNPMB1, said that with the successful installation of the Unit 2 rotor, the project has now completed approximately 90% of the total workload. Therefore, in the coming period, the construction site will focus on aligning the generating unit and conducting tests to ensure that Unit 2 can begin generating electricity in November and that the project can be completed within 2025. This effort is intended to practically commemorate the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
Previously, on August 19, 2025, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of the successful August Revolution and in celebration of National Day on September 2, Unit 1 completed its installation and successfully began generating electricity and connecting to the national grid.
According to EVN, the rotors of Units 1 and 2 of the Hoa Binh Hydropower Expansion Project are the rotating components of the generators. In practice, to ensure the scheduled progress, all assembly work for the stators and rotors of the two generating units, together with turbine installation, has been carefully calculated at every stage and every detail thoroughly inspected throughout the entire process by the project owner, supervising consultant, and equipment installation contractor.

The Hoa Binh Hydropower Expansion Project is considered a nationally important project under the National Power Development Plan for the 2021–2030 period, with a vision to 2050. The project was approved in principle by the Prime Minister under Decision No. 389/QD-TTg dated April 10, 2018.
EVN is the project owner, with Power Project Management Board No. 1 acting as the owner's representative.
Accordingly, the Hoa Binh Hydropower Expansion Project has a total investment of more than VND 9.22 trillion and is being implemented with the following objectives. First, to increase the national power system's peak-load capacity. Second, to improve the economic operation and utilization of the Hoa Binh Hydropower Plant within the power system.
In addition, once completed, the project will enhance the frequency regulation and frequency stability of the national power system, contributing to lower national power system operating costs
